The Fluffy Jackets guitar rig rundown

16. August 2019: Something from Nothing CD + DVD available from Amazon

In the new documentary Something from Nothing fans get a behind-the-scenes look at the Fluffy Jackets' guitars, pedals and amplifiers.

The Fluffy Jackets talks about the guitars used to record "Something from Nothing" (2019). The film is part of the making-of documentary available as a CD+DVD digipack via Cargo Records.

As the old saying goes: 'Guitars don’t care how many other Guitars you have', which may help to explain why guitarists keep purchasing multiple six stringed instruments. In the new music documentary Something from Nothing, fans can get a behind-the-scenes run through of The Fluffy Jackets' guitar rig.

Whilst guitar nerds will appreciate this particular episode, others might find that this particular episode will cause them to fall asleep unexpectedly. Therefore, please do not watch this whilst driving or lifting heavy equipment. Without further ado: we present The Fluffy Jackets guitar rig rundown!

The black Les Paul copy
The first guitar I owned was a Japanese Les Paul copy, which I bought in Wimbledon in the late 1990's. It had no brand name on it but it looked cool and stayed in tune, so I used to play that for years. I used that on the very first gig I played in Acton, and I regret that I sold it - I think I got 50 punds for it.

The white Epiphone Les Paul custom
After that, I purchased a white Ephiphone Les Paul Custom from a guitar shop in Hanwell around 2003. I decided to upgrade the pick-ups and I had it fitted it with two Semour Duncan Pearly Gates humbuckers, which are modelled after Billy Gibbons' famed 1959 sunburst Les Paul. I used that white Epiphone whilst I was in my first band called Random in west London. I since sold that too. It was my brother who bought that Epiphone so I still get to play it from time to time.

The first Gibson Les Paul (USA standard model, 2005)

I always dreamt of owning a Gibson Les Paul Standard and finally got it in 2005. This guitar appears on the cover of the First Fluffy Jackets EP from 2007. I also used this on all the early Fluffy Jackets' gigs. I still have that Les Paul. It is a great axe and plays wonderfully. (picture by James Cumpsty).

I purchased my first Gibson Les Paul Standard at the Gibson factory outlet in Nashville in 2005. A memorable occasion!

The Fender Stratocaster, Eric Clapton Signature (Custom Shop 2004)

I have always had huge respect for Eric Clapton, and although I am not wildly into Stratocaster guitars I always thought I should get one to see what the fuzz was about. So, I managed to hunt down an Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster. I bought this second hand in Denmark street around 2008, and it is an early 2004 edition from the Fender Custom shop. It is a great guitar but doesn't have a tremolo. Still, it is enjoyable to play, and you get that classic Strat sound, as well as a powerful mid-boost which the Clapton signature series are known for. I used this guitar in Sun Studio, and you can hear it on the intro to "Your Way" on the Fighting Demons (2014) album.

The second Gibson Les Paul Standard (Wildwood Spec. 1960 Reissue/ Custom Shop 2011 mod.)

I came over this great Les Paul guitar online in Norway. It is a Custom Shop model from 2011 made as a special run for the Wildwood guitar store in Colorado and has an amazing flame top. So, I just had to buy it. It is the best guitar I have. It plays like butter and sounds truly awesome. It also has custom pickups. A truly amazing guitar.

The Fender Telecaster (Custom Shop 1952 reissue, made in 2004 - one of 150 made)
For a long time, I wanted a Fender Telecaster. However, it took me forever to find one which had not been "relic'ed" which is basically when they scrape and damage the paint on the guitar to make it look old. I am not a fan of that at all - I think it is just stupid to pay for somebody to damage a guitar, but Fender Custom Shop seem to think that this is a great way to "add value" to most of their guitars. Unfortunately, after I bought mine I discovered that it is a light relic model, but it plays great so I do not care about it anymore. Great guitar to play. And it has that twangy Telecaster sound.

The Gibson Flying V (Nazareth / Manny Charlton: 1975 model, custom guitar by luthier John Birch)

Manny asked: "Do you want to buy my Flying V", and I said "Yes, please". So, I am now the lucky owner of the guitar that was used on Expect No Mercy and Play'N the Game, two of my all time favourite Nazareth records. I will always treasure this guitar. There is a special episode on the DVD documentary about this guitar and a separate written feature about it on the Fluffy Jackets website, so I won't go through it all again here. Suffice to say that it is a great axe.

Guitar effects pedals, also known as "stomp-boxes" are useful tools in any guitar player’s toolbox for tone shaping. They are foot-pedal boxes that provide sound effects for the guitar. The Something from Nothing DVD documentary also includes a rundown of some of the guitar effects used to create Fluffy sounds.

The guitar rig rundown video is exclusively available on the new Fluffy Jackets blues-rock documentary Something from Nothing (2019).

About:
The Fluffy Jackets first appeared on the London scene with a self-titled EP in 2007, but it was not until 2014 that they made a dent in the charts with the debut album «Fighting Demons». Recorded at the legendary Sun Studio by multiple Grammy Award winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang, the outing won the Blues Hour’s «Best Studio Album of the Year» award and also earned the band their first international hit in «Why Don’t You Smile». The slow blues was made particularly memorable for featuring a sizzling guitar solo from Nazareth guitar legend Manny Charlton, backed up by bassist Neil Murray (Whitesnake) and Jerry Lee Lewis‘ drummer Rob Hall (The Killer Band). The band has just completed the anticipated follow-up. Released by Cargo Records UK, “Something from Nothing” will be available as a limited Digipack consisting of a nine track CD album and a two-hour DVD documentary film.
