Joe Leach, Engineer & Owner, Cowshed Studio
With more than 20 years’ experience as a producer and engineer, Joe's ability to record and shape sound combined with his philosophy that the vibe and energy of an artist's studio experience can make or break a song has earned The Cowshed its long and loyal client list.
Joe's musical training began aged eight with clarinet and piano and he added contemporary classical composition to his repertoire at the age of 15. He also has his own six-piece outfit called Modified Toy Orchestra.
Working on both sides of the glass has been integral to developing Joe's trademark artist-orientated approach. After cutting his teeth as Assistant Engineer at Planet Studios, West Australia's premier 24-track facility, he returned to his native London in the early 90s where he began a freelance career which saw him work with artists from Roy Ayers through to the Stereophonics in top European studios and venues from Shepherd's Bush Empire to Abbey Road. In 1998 he became chief engineer at The Premises in Shoreditch, where he oversaw the complete revamp of the equipment and acoustics before going on to establish his reputation at the forefront of the UK jazz world.
Two years on he launched The Cowshed, a studio specialising in live band recordings combining analogue with cutting edge digital approaches. Since then as a dedicated music recordist he has been the producer/engineer of choice for over a thousand musicians, many of them top international and award-winning acts such as Boy George, John Etheridge, Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Jamie Cullum, Charlotte Church and Marcella Detroit. His conviction that great recordings are well-taken snapshots of exceptional points in time, combined with his commitment to creating the environment that catalyzes the moment has ensured his reputation as a craftsman of vivid, dimensional recordings that exude musicality.
Joe Leach was the engineer on The Fluffy Jackets recordings which took place at the Cowshed studio in 2012 and 2013, and have also mixed the Fluffy Jackets’ songs emerging from the Cowshed sessions. In addition, Joe can be heard on the new Fluffy Jackets album, providing tambourine and innovative hand-knee-clapping on the title cut.
