Exclusive: Manny Charlton (Nazareth) guitar rig rundown16. August 2019: Something from Nothing CD + DVD available from Amazon Manny Charlton (Nazareth) knows a thing or two about playing the guitar. He has done so for over 60 years. Incredibly, nobody has gotten around to interview him about his guitars before - until now. The Manny Charlton guitar rig interview is exclusively available in the new Fluffy Jackets' limited-edition Digipack (DVD+CD) release Something from Nothing.
"I have more, but this is plenty" says Manny Charlton, sitting in front of his guitars at his home studio in Andalucía, Spain.
"This guitar has a lovely balanced tone and is easy to play", comments Manny Charlton about a US-made Taylor acoustic guitar. "It is not like my Martin guitar, which is a lot harder to play. You see; what happens if you don't play a lot, you lose muscles in your hand which is very important for guitarists. And I don't play as much; not like in the days with Nazareth when I was playing six nights a week. Now I tend to spend more time in the studio which is a different game to playing live every night". Another guitar he has made himself: "When I was in Scotland, a wonderful guy called Bob Laidlaw whom I used to work with on the dockyard was starting to make guitars. And I said; yeah, I don't do much now, so I joined him to make a couple of guitars. His guitars were close to works of art, but I am not patient; I just flung them together. I just wanted to hear what it sounded like, you know? And this guitar just ended up sounding amazing. It has Sperzels locking tuners, a flat maple top, one Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickup which is modelled after Billy Gibbons' 1959 Burst."
Guitarists and Nazareth-fans will also be interested to see Manny Charlton's guitar effect pedals that he has used throughout the years to create Nazareth records and his solo albums. This "pedal show" is also available as bonus material in the documentary, together with a featurette about his 1975 Gibson Flying V guitar used to record the Expect No Mercy (Nazareth) album from 1977.
